First day of the year

I always approach January 1st with a sense of anticipation for the exciting possibilities that lie ahead. This year, I wanted to begin the New Year by doing something I haven't done before; something I could only do here in LA.

I was inspired by Weekend Sherpa to do a sunrise hike at Will Rogers State Park. The alarm went off at 5:30 this morning, and it was still dark when Dan and I reached the trailhead. We trekked up the easy mountain with the light of the moon as our guide for about a mile until we reached the aptly named Inspiration Point, where we watched the sun rise over the City of Angels. The Sherpa was right: We could see all the way from downtown LA to the ocean waves at Santa Monica Bay.

It was only a 2.25-mile loop, but by the time we finished, I felt like we had already accomplished a lot. Which is how you want to feel at the start of the year, right?
