Filiorum Reserve

Lately, I have been focusing my time and energy on things that make me feel good. I have started doing acupuncture and taking Chinese herbs to manage my stress. I indulge in a restorative yoga class most Sunday nights where I basically spend an hour lying on pillows. I meditate. And when I do get out of the house, I want to be outside in nature.

(Am I turning into a California hippie or what?) It's how I am getting by.

I suppose something that is quite special about LA is that despite the fact it's this giant, bustling urban sprawl, there are natural escapes everywhere.

Take this hike, for example. You basically drive up to this random residential neighborhood in Rancho Palos Verde, park on the street, walk behind the houses and are greeted by the trail head at what must be one of the most beautiful "backyards" I have ever seen. The hike is pretty shortabout a mile and a halfbut it packs a powerful punch: a spectacular view of the ocean, a colorful hillside carpeted with tall grasses, trees and wildflowers, and a few steep climbs to get your heart pumping.

On the way home, we stopped in Manhattan Beach to fill up on some burgers, fries and ice cream. I don't think that's very California hippie, but it felt pretty good to me, too.
