I like any excuse to make a cake, and visiting our friends Brad and Holly in Sonoma seemed like a good one. My goal was to make something homey and rustic, nothing too fussy. I found exactly what I was looking for in the Martha Stewart Baking Handbook. This classic crumb cake gets its flavor from an insane amount of butter, both in the cake and a thick sugar-and-cinnamon topping. True to its name, the moment you sink your fork into it, it dissolves into a bunch of sweet crumbs.
It's the perfect breakfast cake, though we found ourselves returning to it pretty much all day long. So, I guess you could say it's versatile.
